“Signification and Adaptations of the Spiritual in Works by African-American Composers”
Presented by Horace J. Maxile, Ph.D.
2:00 P.M., Saturday, February 15, 2014 at The African American Library at The Gregory School, 1300 Victor Street in Freedmen’s Town-Fourth Ward, Houston, TX, 77019.
This is a Houston Ebony Opera Guild presentation by Dr. Horace J. Maxile, Jr., Assistant Professor of Music at Baylor University in Waco, Texas. Using discussion and musical examples, Dr. Maxile will help the audience better understand and appreciate the music that is derived from African-American choral and vocal traditions. Dr. Maxile’s lecture will explore some non-choral works and also provide a preview of selected pieces to be performed by the Houston Ebony Opera Guild Chorus at its Annual African American Music Gala, a concert of works by selected Black composers that is scheduled for the fourth Sunday in February.
This FREE program is sponsored by Friends of Houston Ebony Opera Guild in conjunction with The African American Library at The Gregory School.
Admission: FREE.
